Some Songs Don't Take Us Back. They Take Us There

Image
Music and the memories it carries. I don't know if this happens to you, but there are certain songs that can instantly take me somewhere else. Not just in my mind. Somehow, they make me feel like I'm there again. It usually happens when I least expect it. A few nights ago, I was lying in bed when I heard music coming from a church somewhere close to my house. It wasn't exactly close, but their speakers were loud enough for the sound to travel. They were singing hymns. And not just any hymns. They were songs I grew up singing as a child in my local church back home. I lay there listening, and something about hearing those familiar songs from a distance gave me goosebumps. For a moment, I wasn't just a grown woman lying in bed at night. I was that little girl again. I could almost feel the atmosphere of those years. The church. The songs. The people. The simplicity of being young. Things I hadn't consciously thought about in a long time suddenly felt close again. An...

Nobody Warned Me That Adulthood Would Feel Like This

Image
Image source: Pinterest   When I was sixteen, adulthood looked beautiful. It looked like freedom. Freedom to eat whatever I wanted without asking for permission. Freedom to go wherever I pleased without my dad checking the time and asking, "Why are you just getting home?" Freedom to fall in love with the man I wanted. Freedom to make my own decisions. Growing up in a strict home, adulthood looked like the finish line. I couldn't wait to get there—not just because I wanted freedom, but because I admired the adults around me. I looked at my aunties, my older cousins and my uncles, and they all seemed to be living the life I wanted. They went out when they wanted, bought things with their own money, made their own decisions, and nobody questioned them the way children are questioned. I remember wishing I could fast-forward my life and wake up as one of them. The funny thing is, years later, I catch my own children looking at me the same way. They can't wait to grow up ei...

The Pain of Unreciprocated Love

Image
We may have experienced an emotional bond or attachment to these types of people at some point in our life. An emotional bond with a person who is unaware of it. An emotional bond with someone who knows how you feel but does not share your feelings at all, or A sentimental bond with a former companion. These three groups are connected by the fact that none of the two parties feels the same way about the other. This hurts a lot. AN EMOTIONAL BOND WITH A PERSON WHO IS UNAWARE OF IT: For someone who has no clue about your feelings is in his or her world. He or she might be doing certain things to you innocently that could either keep leading you on or hurting you without him or her knowing until you open up to them.  Communicating your feelings is very important. However, it's either you get positive feedback that they feel the same way or otherwise but most often, it is always negative feedback because they had no clue in the first place.  AN EMOTIONAL BOND WITH SOMEONE W...

I asked for advice all the time till my kid finally pooped. I relived my ...
