Some Songs Don't Take Us Back. They Take Us There

| Music and the memories it carries. |
I don't know if this happens to you, but there are certain songs that can instantly take me somewhere else.
Not just in my mind.
Somehow, they make me feel like I'm there again.
It usually happens when I least expect it.
A few nights ago, I was lying in bed when I heard music coming from a church somewhere close to my house. It wasn't exactly close, but their speakers were loud enough for the sound to travel.
They were singing hymns.
And not just any hymns.
They were songs I grew up singing as a child in my local church back home.
I lay there listening, and something about hearing those familiar songs from a distance gave me goosebumps.
For a moment, I wasn't just a grown woman lying in bed at night.
I was that little girl again.
I could almost feel the atmosphere of those years. The church. The songs. The people. The simplicity of being young. Things I hadn't consciously thought about in a long time suddenly felt close again.
And that's the strange thing about music.
Sometimes you don't have to deliberately remember.
A song remembers for you.
There are songs I can hear today that immediately remind me of a particular period of my life. Sometimes I don't even remember the exact event attached to the song until I hear it.
Maybe someone was playing it at the time.
Maybe it was popular when something important happened.
Maybe I heard it repeatedly during a particular season of my life.
Whatever the connection is, the moment that song plays, something inside me recognizes it.
And suddenly, I'm remembering.
Sometimes it's a happy memory.
Sometimes it's bittersweet.
And sometimes I can't even explain what I'm feeling.
I just know that I want to go back.
Not necessarily because I want that exact moment back.
But because I miss the feeling that came with it.
That's something I've come to realize about nostalgia.
Sometimes we don't actually miss the past.
We miss who we were in it.
We miss the people we used to know.
The places that no longer feel the same.
The version of ourselves that existed before life changed us.
The innocence.
The excitement.
The simplicity.
The people who were once part of our everyday lives but are now only part of our memories.
And somehow, a song can bring all of that back without asking for permission.
That may be why hearing certain songs from a distance feels different to me.
Maybe it's because I'm not intentionally listening to them.
I'm simply going about my life, and suddenly I hear a familiar melody floating through the air.
There is something almost magical about that.
You don't search for the memory.
The memory finds you.
One minute you're walking down the road, working, cooking, lying in bed, or doing something completely ordinary.
Then a song starts playing.
And suddenly, you're somewhere else.
You remember a person.
A place.
A conversation.
A season.
A version of yourself.
A life you haven't thought about in years.
It's almost as if our lives are filled with invisible bookmarks, and music knows exactly where some of them are.
That's why I don't think some songs are just songs.
Some songs are time capsules.
They carry pieces of our lives inside them.
And years later, when we hear them again, they open.
Maybe that's why I get goosebumps sometimes.
Maybe that's why a random song can make me smile for no obvious reason.
Maybe that's why a hymn drifting through the night can make an adult woman lying in bed suddenly feel like a child again.
Because for those few minutes, I'm not simply listening to music.
I'm remembering.
And maybe, in some strange way, I'm visiting a part of myself that I thought I'd left behind.

I have experienced this, there is this hymn my father taught us as kids. In my whole life as an adult, I never heard it, until last year when a lady sang it in my church.
